ROSE
Rose tells the story of a first-generation immigrant woman who shaped the trajectory of modern art in America by showing the work of emerging abstract artists in her gallery, including Marcel Duchamp, Piet Mondrian, Sonia Delaunay, Vasily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, Max Ernst, and more, giving several of them their very first exhibits in the United States. Drawing on family interviews, meticulous research, public records including 8.1 linear feet of papers at the Smithsonian’s Archives of American Art, and a long-lost 1963 audio recording, this project brings forward a nuanced, factual, and deeply human story that has never been told.
